Spiral & Curved Stairs

Spiral stairs create a funky industrial look or can be a natty solution when space is limited. They can be purposely built to fit in tiny spaces. Spiral stairs are a practical and fun way to get around. Elegant sweeping helix or curved stairs make a statement in both classic and modern homes. Our team welcome the challenge of making these complex masterpieces.
Division Engineering is a Christchurch-based architectural steel fabricator specialising in custom spiral staircases for residential and commercial projects across the South Island. Based in Kaiapoi, we design, fabricate and install bespoke spiral staircases engineered to suit your building's layout, structure and architectural vision, with every dimension confirmed via 3D modelling before a single piece of steel is cut.

As experienced spiral staircase designers and fabricators, we combine accuracy and imagination to solve real spatial problems while delivering architectural impact.

From concept through installation, we work directly with architects, builders, designers and homeowners. We thrive on tight spaces, impossible footprints and elegant solutions. Compliance with the New Zealand Building Code is non-negotiable.

Custom spiral
staircase design

Every Division spiral staircase starts on the drawing board with our in-house design and draft team. Our team of experienced spiral staircase designers, work alongside architects, builders, interior designers and homeowners to refine the geometry, centre column, tread profile and balustrade before a single piece of steel is cut.

Using 3D modelling, we cross-check every dimension against your plans and your stair opening, so what you sign off is exactly what gets installed. Exceptional design deserves more than an off-the-shelf kit, we engineer each staircase from scratch to suit your space, style and budget.

Spiral vs curved
staircases design

Both make a statement, but they solve different problems:

Spiral staircases wind around a central column in a tight circle. They have the smallest footprint of any stair, which makes them ideal for mezzanines, lofts, tight corners and anywhere floor space is limited.

Curved or helical staircases sweep in an open arc with no central pole. They need more room and read as a grander, architectural feature in entranceways and double-height spaces.

Not sure which suits your project? Send us your plans and we'll can help you discover what fits your space and the look you're after.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a spiral staircase?

A spiral staircase rotates around a central column in a tight circle. the smallest footprint of any staircase. Ideal for mezzanines, lofts, tight corners and anywhere floor space is precious. It's a statement piece that solves real spatial problems while delivering architectural impact.

How much does a spiral staircase cost in Christchurch?

Cost depends on diameter, height, materials, finish and balustrade design. Because every spiral staircase is custom-engineered to your building and space, pricing is confirmed after we review your architectural plans and assess site conditions.

Do spiral staircases meet NZ Building Code requirements?

Compliance is non-negotiable. Every spiral staircase we design meets NZBC requirements for tread dimensions, handrail design, head clearance and balustrade heights. During design, we assess whether your spiral works as primary or secondary access and engineer accordingly.

What's the difference between a spiral and curved (helical) staircase?

Spirals wind tightly around a central column, ideal for compact spaces. Curved (helical) staircases sweep in an open arc with no central pole,  they need more room and read as a grander architectural feature. Send us your plans and we'll recommend which suits your space and vision.

What materials do you use to make spiral staircases?

Mild steel, combined with timber treads, glass balustrades or custom metal infills. Finishes are selected for durability, interior or exterior application, and architectural intent. Every material choice serves the design.

Do you install spiral staircases for commercial buildings?

Yes. Spiral staircases are widely used in commercial and architectural projects for secondary access, mezzanine levels, fire egress and space-efficient circulation. Each is engineered to meet compliance standards and functional demands.

Can you design and build spiral stairs in Christchurch?

Yes. Based in Kaiapoi, Christchurch, Division Engineering designs, fabricates and installs custom spiral staircases for residential and commercial projects throughout Christchurch, Canterbury and the South Island.
