Floating
Stairs

With no visible spine, floating stairs pique curiosity and are popular with architects designing a minimalist look. The extra space underneath produces a clean, neat appearance.
From our well-equipped Kaiapoi workshop, Division Engineering designs, fabricates and installs custom floating staircases and cantilever stairs for architects, builders and homeowners across Canterbury and the South Island.

Both demand engineering discipline and treads cantilevered from a structural wall, appearing weightless, disappearing visually so the space they shape becomes unmistakable. With a proactive engineering project management team and experienced fabrication engineers.

No matter the challenge, your floating staircase or cantilever stairs will be delivered with creativity and precision from concept through installation.

Cantilever

Treads cantilevered from a wall with no visible support structure or central column. Each tread is precision-engineered to appear weightless while delivering absolute structural integrity.

A bold architectural statement that demands engineering discipline.

Floating Stairs

Treads anchored to a structural wall, appearing to float unsupported in space. With no visible spine or central column, floating stairs deliver clean sightlines and open up interior volumes.

Ideal for minimalist design and light-filled spaces.

Project Steps

Architectural Staircase Design and 3D Modelling

Our in-house design and draft team will work closely with you to minimise any stress or uncertainty. With the aid of 3D modelling software, we’ll ensure your architectural stairs are made to measure and deliver on the promise of your original design. We’ll cross-check all measurements and dimensions are correct before we move on to metal fabrication.

Fabrication & Project Management

Your staircase will have its very own project manager and fabrication team working closely together to ensure all quality aspects and programme requirements are met.

Finished Product & Installation

Throughout installation, your stairs will be handled by a dedicated team of site installers who are highly-trained in staircase erection. Without exception, all stairs will be installed to the high-quality specifications we pride ourselves on, to achieve an uncompromising end-result.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a floating staircase or cantilever staircase?

Both systems anchor treads to a structural wall with no visible spine or stringers. Floating staircases and cantilever stairs appear weightless, disappearing visually so the space they shape becomes unmistakable. The engineering discipline is identical load paths calculated to precision, wall capacity assessed, every dimension confirmed before fabrication.

How much do floating stairs or cantilever staircases cost?

Cost depends on tread quantity, materials, balustrade design, wall structure and installation complexity. Because every floating staircase or cantilever staircase is custom-engineered to your project, pricing is confirmed after we review your architectural plans and assess structural requirements

Do floating staircases and cantilever stairs meet NZ Building Code requirements?

Yes. Floating staircases and cantilever stairs are engineered to comply with the New Zealand Building Code — tread dimensions, head clearance, handrails and balustrade heights. Structural suitability is assessed during design. Compliance is non-negotiable.

Are floating stairs and cantilever staircases suitable for residential and commercial projects?

Yes. Floating staircases and cantilever stairs are widely used across Canterbury in residential and commercial builds, open-plan homes, architectural feature spaces, mezzanines and high-end interiors where clean visual lines are required. We thrive on projects where precision matters.

How much space is required for a floating staircase or cantilever staircase?

Floating staircases and cantilever stairs require a structurally sound supporting wall but deliver minimal visible footprint. Tread projection, wall load and compliance requirements are engineered and confirmed during the design phase. We get the job done.
